The narrator i.e Ernst Hemingway asked the old man to go to Tortosa, Barcelona through the trucks which were up the road because at the place where old man was sitting was not safe as the fascists were going to attack. He did not follow the narrator's instruction and he was unwilling to go because he very much worried his animals ( a cat, two goats and four pairs of pigeons) .
He had no family and he loved his animals as his family.
