So the phrases 'old customs' and 'narrow domestic walls' are contradictory to the word progress.  Anyone interested to move forward can not move backward. Progress means forward adventure into the unknown realms of possibilities; one intending to explore the unknown, cannot take the burden of already known customs along with him or her. Narrow domestic walls is another expression for narrowness of thought, parochial attitude, and outlook on life; progress in contrast stands for infinitenese and limitless pursuit of perfection with tireless efforts. So in the circumstances of old customs, and narrow domestic walls progress is impossible. Hence they both hinder progress.
