Old hens can be bought at rs 20 and young ones at rs. 50 each . The old hens lay 3 eggs per week and the young ones lay 5 eggs per week ,each egg being worth rs 3. A hen costs rs 10 per week to be fed . If there are only rs. 800 available to be sent on purchasing the hens , how many of each kind of hens should be bought in order to have a maximum profit per week , assuming that it is not possible to house more than 20 hens at a time

Answer:

16 young hens

Step-by-step explanation:

Max number of hen = 20 (given)

Old hen = Rs 20 each

Young hen = Rs 50 each

Find the earnings of each old hen:

Number eggs per week = 3

Price per egg = Rs 3

Earning per week = 3 x 3 = Rs 9

Feed per week = Rs 10

Profit / Loss per week = 9 - 10 = -1

There is a loss of Rs 1 a week

Find the earnings of the young hen:

Number eggs per week = 5

Price per egg = Rs 3

Earning per week = 5 x 3 = Rs 15

Feed per week = Rs 10

Profit / Loss per week = 15 - 10 = 5

There is a profit of Rs 5 a week

Find the number hens to buys:

Since it is not profitable to buy the old hen, all the Rs 800 should be spent on young hens

Number of young hens to purchase = 800 ÷ 50 = 16

Answer: 16 young hens.
