Answer: Lutkins was good at winning stranger's heart. When he knew the purpose of narrator's visit, he immediately came up with a plan. He introduced himself as Bill- the hack driver. Bill promised the narrator to help him in finding Oliver , and thus kept him roaming the entire village. Thus, Oliver Lutkins, along with fellow villagers, fooled the narrator by keeping him engaged all day.
