On 11March 2011. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan was severely
damaged by an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 and the tsunami that followed. This led to the leakage of radioactive materials from the power plant into the atmosphere. The radioactive substances were mainly iodine-131, caesium- 137 and strontium-90.
Iodine-131 is one of the most lethal radioactive substances released in nuclear reactions. Because the thyroid gland in our bodies absorb iodine to regulate our metabolic rate. The excessive intake of iodine-131 causes cancer and stunt children’s growth. Caesium -137 forms caesium chloride. If caesium-137 in the form of caesium chloride gets into the body, the radioactive substance will be distributed to muscle tissues. This increases the risk of cancer.
Suggest an element which can readily replace by caesium in the body.
