Given data : On a 120 km long railway track train, train travels the first 80 kilometre at a uniform speed of 160 kilometre per hour.

To find : Calculate the speed with which should the train shoud move on the the rest of the track so as to get the average speed of 80 kilometre per hour for

the entire trip.

Solution : Firstly we have to find time taken by train to cover 80 km.

⟹ speed = distance/time

⟹ 160 = 80/time

⟹ time = 80/160

⟹ time = ½ hour (30 minutes) ----{1}

Now,

⟹ average speed = total distance/total time taken

⟹ 80 = 120/total time taken

⟹ total time taken = 120/80

⟹ total time taken = 3/2 hour (90 minutes) ----{2}

We know train covered 80 km distance from 120 km.

So remaining distance is 40 km.

(from {1} and {2})

⟹ time taken to cover 40 km = total time - ½ hour

⟹ time taken to cover 40 km = 3/2 - 1/2

⟹ time taken to cover 40 km = 1 hour

Now,

⟹ speed = distance/time

⟹ speed = 40/1

⟹ speed = 40 km/hr

Answer : Hence speed of train is 40 km/hr so as to get the average speed of 80 kilometre per hour for the entire trip.
