He was so impressed by his wit that he gave him his ring and asked him to come to the
palace. Mahesh Das came from his village to the emperor's palace, the guards prevented
him from meeting the king because they did not believe that the young man who was
wearing torn clothes had been invited by the emperor. On seeing the emperor's ring, the
guards thought that Mahesh had come to receive some reward. They were filled with greed
and agreed to let him go in on the condition that he would share half the reward with him.
Mahesh Das agreed and was allowed inside. Akbar asked Mahesh Das to choose his reward.
