India is divided into six major physiographic divisions.

Explanation:

  • The major physiographic divisions of India are Himalayan mountain, peninsular plateau, great Indian plains, great Indian desert, coastal plains, islands. India has a coastline of 7516.6 km and is located on the indo-Australian plate.
  • The Himalayan mountains consist of young and fold mountains which are divided into various ranges of upper, lower, and souther or trans Himalayas. The Indian desert lies on the western side of the subcontinent and has a dry and arid climate.  
  • The peninsular plateau is a triangular-shaped landmass that has formed by the volcanic traps. And receives rainfall of 150 mm per year. It was a part of the Gondwana landmass.
  • The western ghats coastal plains consist of uplifted lands that have broken hills and the eastern ghats consist of eroded hills and lowlands. The Andaman and Nicobar island group form in the bay of Bengal and d Lakshadweep island in the Arabian sea.
