Given : On a number line, points A, B and C are such that d(A,C) = 10, d(C,B) =  8

To Find :  d(A, B) considering all possibilities.

Solution

3!/2  = 3  ways  ( A in middle , B in middle or C in Middle)

A      B     C

AC = 10   BC  =  8   => AB  = AC - BC  = 10 - 8 = 2

A      C      B

AB = AC + BC = 10 + 8 = 18

B       A      C  ( not Possible ) as   AC > BC

AB = 2  or AB = 18
