on a square cardboard sheet of area 784 cm sq.,four congruent circular plates of maximum size are place such that each circular plate touches the other two plates and each side of the square sheet is tangent to two circular plates.find the area of the square sheet not covered by the circular plates.

so each side of square =a^2=784cm^2=√a=√784=28cm..now..diameter of each circle=28/2=14cm..so radius=14/2=7cm..so area of 4 congruent circular plates=4*22/7*7*7=616cm^2..so area not covered by the circular plates=784-616=168cm^2(ans)
