On adding dilute HCl to a mixture of iron fillings and Sulphur, an odourless gas is produced. But a gas with rotten eggs is produced when the same acid is added to iron sulphide. Explain.

Iron sulfide reacts with hydrochloric acid, releasing the malodorous (rotten egg smell) and very toxic gas,hydrogen sulphide.

FeS + 2 HCl → FeCl2+ H2S
