This is known as addition reaction.

Also known as hydrogenation of vegetable oils.

CH2=CH2 +H2-> C2H5 (Ethane)

on addition of hydrogen to ethene we get ethane.
this process is called hydrogenation.
nickel adsorbs the hudrogen on the surfaceand help in addition of hydrogen.
like nickel palladium also works as hydrogen adsorbent and completes hydrogenation
