LUCKNOW: The state government will felicitate the descendants of Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar and freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in Lucknow on December 30.
The programme is being organised on the 101st anniversary of the historic Lucknow Pact. “Children or grandchildren of 27 freedom fighters from all over India are being contacted. Many have already agreed to come,” said principal secretary, UP tourism and information and public relations departments, Awanish Awasthi.
The two departments will jointly host the event. Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Governor Ram Naik will also attend the event. “Besides being of great importance to India, Lucknow Pact is also significant for people in Maharashtra as it was signed between Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Mohammad Ali Jinnah. The pact formally adopted the goal of a self government (swaraj) in India, something which Tilak had pressed for over the years,” said Awasthi.
Among those being invited are descendants of freedom fighters Udham Singh, Ram Prasad Bismil, Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Mangal Pandey, Ashfaqullah Khan and Rajguru.
