On burning a piece of charcoal,a gas evolves.How is it possible to know whether the gas is acidic or basic in nature?

C + O2 = CO2

FOR testing its nature first collect the gas in delivery tube with one of its end opened in a beaker full of water and then bring the litmus paper to check whether it is acidic or basic .
