On Christmas Eve I saw that my mother had outdone herself in creating a strange menu. She was pulling black veins out of the backs of fleshy prawns. The kitchen was littered with appalling mounds of raw food: A slimy rock cod with bulging fish eyes that pleaded not to be thrown into a pain of hot oil. Tofu, which looked like stacked wedges of rubbery white sponges. A bowl soaking dried fungus back to life. A plate of squid, their backs crisscrossed with knife markings so they resembled bicycle tires.

The precise words that have a strong feeling or connotation include:

  • Strange- The connotation is strong because it highlights that the experience is out of the ordinary, and hence has a strong effect on the speaker.
  • Littered- ‘Littered’ is usually accompanied by a strong sense of annoyance and disgust because nothing is in order.
  • Rubbery- It is a word that gives the precise feel of the texture.
  • Fungus- This word too conveys a lot in terms of staleness, lack of care/attention and unhygienic conditions. It also brings forth unpleasant images.
  • Crisscrossed- By itself this word does not have very strong connotations, but in this passage, the knife markings give it a different feel altogether. It can convey a sense of expertise (using the knife well) or aggression. Either way, the image stays in the head.
