SOLUTION

TO DETERMINE

The remainder when 5x³ - 2x² - 7x + 1 is divided by x

EVALUATION

Let f(x) = 5x³ - 2x² - 7x + 1

g(x) = x

For Zero of the polynomial g(x) we have

g(x) = 0

⇒ x = 0

Hence by the Remainder Theorem the required Remainder when f(x) is divided by g(x) is

= f(0)

= 5 × 0³ - 2 × 0² - 7 × 0 + 1

= 0 - 0 - 0 + 1

= 1
