On Diwali eve, two candies, one of which is 3 cm longer than the other are lighted. The longer one is
lighted at 5.30 p.m. and the shorter at 7 p.m. At 9.30p.m. they both are of the same length. The longer
one burns out at 11.30p.m. and the shorter one at 11 p.m. How long was each candle originally?

Answer:

the longer candle= 12 cm

the shorter one = 8 cm

Explanation:

Say,longer candle= x

and shorter one = y

X is lit at 5:30;. y is lit at 7:00

X is 3cm longer than Y

And if by 9:30, they're equal; the difference between the two candles in time=1hr30mins

the difference between the two candles in length=3cm

therefore 1 cm burns for 30 mins(1hr30mins/3cm)

Now,if X is burnt out by 11:30,the original length Will be 12cm (5:30-11:30; 30 mins per cm)

And if Y is burnt out by 11 pm, the original length Will be 8cm(7:00-11:00; 30 mins per cm)

Hope it helps!
