This is a redox reaction.

Concentrated Sulphuric acid is a strong oxidizing agent.

On heating Copper turnings together with concentrated Sulphuric acid the Copper is oxidized whereas the Conc sulphuric acid is reduced.

The Copper is oxidized to form Copper Sulphate whereas the Sulphuric acid is reduced to form Sulphur (iv) Oxide.

The equation for the reaction is as follows:

Cu(s) + 2H₂SO₄(l) --------> CuSO₄(aq)  + SO₂(g) + 2H₂O(l)

The gas is Sulphur (iv) Oxide
