Potassium Permanganate when heated in air it decomposes. First it loses its oxygen and then decomposes to form potassium manganite, manganese oxide and oxygen.

The balanced equation is as follows:

2KmnO₄ → K₂MnO₄ + MnO₄ + O₂

Here, two molecules of Potassium Permanganate on being heated in air produces one molecule of Potassium Manganate, one molecule of Manganese Oxide and one oxygen molecule.

This reaction shows a change in colour from purple KMnO₄ to green K₂MnO₄
