Given,

On a fishing trip;

Justin rides in a boat 12 km south, then 4 km west, and finally, 1 km north.

To find,

a) Total distance covered

b) Total displacement

Solution,

We can simply solve this numerical problem by using the following process:

According to the question;

Total distance covered

= 12 km south + 4 km west + 1 km north

= 17 Km

And, total displacement

= √{(12-1)^2 + (4)^2}

(Using Pythagoras theorem)

= √{(11)^2 + (4)^2}

= √{121 + 16}

= √137

= 11.7 Km approximately

Hence, the total distance traveled by Justin is 17 kilometers and his total displacement is approximately equal to 11.7 kilometers.
