CaC2 on hydrolysis gives ethyne while Al4C3 on hydrolysis gives methane.

1) Hydrolysis is the process of breaking down of a compound by water.

2) When calcium carbide reacts with water, it breaks down to give ethyne and calcium hydroxide.

CaC2 + 2H2O → C2H2 + Ca(OH)2

3) This is a very good method for manufacturing ethyne industrially.

4) Similarly, aluminum carbide also gets hydrolysed by water to give methane gas and aluminum hydroxide as products.

Al4C3 + 12H2O → Al(OH)3 + 3CH4

5) This method is used for the laboratory preparation of methane.
