Maxwell distribution of molecular velocities states that:-

  • Maxwell and Boltzmann in 1900 proposed a curve to study the distribution of speeds of molecules of an ideal gas.
  • It is plotted between the speed of molecules (on the X-axis) and the number of molecules (on the Y-axis). The area under this graph reveals the total number of molecules of the gas, thus it remains constant.
  • On increasing the temperature, the average molecular velocities increases, and the peak shifts to the right. But the height of the graph decreases in order to keep its area constant. Thus, the number of molecules possessing average velocity decreases.
