Choose to challenge

- by staff reporter(indian express news service )

Celebrated on March 8 every year, this day is symbolic of the historic journey women around the world have taken to better their lives. It comes as a reminder that while a lot has been achieved, the journey is long and a lot more needs to be done.

International Women’s Day has been celebrated for over a century now. But while many people think of it as a feminist cause, its roots lie in the labour movement. It was first organised in 1911 by the early 20th century Marxist from Germany Clara Zetkin.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #ChooseToChallenge. It indicates that a “challenged world is an alert world, and from challenge comes change”.

This year, we can all choose to challenge everything that has been holding us back, and become better allies.

Every year on March 8, International Women's Day (IWD) honours women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. The Day, which has been observed for almost a century, has its origins in the organized labor instead of the feminist movement. Clara Zetkin, a German Marxist from the early twentieth century, was the first to establish it in 1911.

International Women's Day was honoured for nearly a century. While many people link it with feminist themes, it actually has labour movement roots. It was founded in 1911 by Clara Zetkin, a German Communist from the early twentieth century.

In the German village of Wiederau, Zetkin was born in 1857. She was a teacher with ties to the Social Democratic Party (SPD), which is now one of the country's two major political parties. She was a strong supporter of both the labour and women's movements.

When German leader Otto von Bismarck enacted anti-socialist laws in the 1880s, Zetkin fled into identity exile in Switzerland and France. She created and circulated forbidden literature during this time, as well as meeting important communists of the time. Zetkin was also instrumental in the founding of the Communist International.

She returned to Germany in 1892 becoming the editor of Die Gleichheit ('Equality,' the SPD's women's newspaper) from 1892 until 1917. In the SPD, Zetkin was closely affiliated with Rosa Luxemburg, a far-left thinker and revolutionary. Zetkin argued at a meeting in 1910, 3 years since becoming a co-founder of the World Socialist Women's Congress, that February 28 be proclaimed as Women's Day in all countries.

The proposal was unanimously approved by unions, socialist parties, working women's groups, and female lawmakers at the meeting, which included 100 women from 17 nations. The inaugural Women's Day was observed in 1911. In 1913, the date was changed to March 8, and it has been that manner ever since.
