In the context of the chapter "on killing a tree", the poet says it is not an easy task to kill a tree as one stab of a knife in its trunk won't kill the tree... Even if we chop down the tree, it's stump still remains, and though it isn't exactly alive, the tree isn't lifeless at this point either. In order to get rid of the tree completely, one must uproot it, which is yet not an easy task as the root of the trees have been buried deep into the earth and combined with the soil, nourished and protected for years...in order to kill a tree, one must dig deep into the earth and pull out the roots, "white and wet" as the poet, Gieve Patel, quotes. This in itself is a huge task and requires a lot of time, strength, hardwork and patience. Hence, the poet conveys that it is not an easy task to kill a tree.

Hope this helps :)
