it turns milky due to the formation of calcium carbonate
Co2 + Cao ---> CaCo3
when excess of co2 is passed , Caco3 dissolves

Actually , when excess CO2 is passed over CaCO3 (in the presence of moisture) , it turns into calcium bicarbonate {CA(HCO3)2} which is water-soluble and the soln turns colourless!
