On passing (rotten egg smell) gas X through an aqueous solution of copper sulphate, a black precipitate (compound) Y is formed.

Smell of Hydrogen sulfide is like a rotten egg. Therefore, the compound X is Hydrogen sulfide having formula H2S.

The following reaction takes place:

H2S + CuSO4 → CuS + H2SO4

When Hydrogen sulfide reacts with Copper sulphate then formation of Copper sulfide and Sulfuric acid takes place.

Compound Y is Copper sulfide having formula CuS.

The above reaction is an example of Double Displacement Reaction. (When two elements displaces each other from it's compound, such type of reaction is known as Double Displacement Reaction.

AB + CD → AD + CB)
