on placing a piece of aluminium metal in The solution of mercuric chloride , it acquires a shining silvery surface but when it is placed in a solution of magnesium sulphate ,no change is observed .explain .

Its correct that if we keep aluminium metal in the solution of mercuric chloride it will acquires a shining surface bcoz..... as we see through the reactivity series aluminium is highly reactive than mercury so it displace it from its solution ....but on the other hand... when it is kept in  magnesium sulphate no change will occur...because aluminium now is comparatively less reactive than magnesium ...so it wont displace it from its salt solution.....hope this may help you..

When a piece of zinc metal is placed in a solution of mercuric chloride a white layer of mercury is deposited on zinc metal to give it silvery shining look. This is because mercury is lower to zinc in reactivity series and hence zinc can displace mercury from HgCl2

But when zinc is placed in a solution of magnesium sulphate there is no change this is because magnesium is above zonc in the reactivity series and hence zinc cannot displace magnesium from its salt solution
