when we place Zinc metal in a solution of Mercury it acquires a silvery surface because of a chemical reaction that takes place but when we place zinc and magnesium sulphate solution it cannot replace magnesium and form zinc sulphate because zinc is less reactive than magnesium

If we add Zn with Mercury we will find a silver shiny surface because of the chemical reaction between them.
Since, this reaction can't take with MgSO4 ,so it doesn't give such color with it.
