Squamous epithelium has cells that are wider than their height (flat and scale-like). This is found as the lining of the mouth, oesophagus, and including blood vessels and in the alveoli of the lungs. Cuboidal epithelium has cells whose height and width are approximately the same (cube shaped).

  • It consists of a single layer of flattened cells with irregular bodies.
  • They are found in the walls of the blood vessels and air sacs of lungs.
  • They are involved in the formation of diffusion boundary. i.e., they help in diffusion of materials such as gases

Cuboidal epithelium:

  • It consists of a single layer of cube-like cells.
  • They are commonly found in the ducts of glands, tubular part of nephrons etc.  
  • Their functions include secretion and absorption.
  • they may also have microvilli in the cells of proximal convoluted tubule (PCT).
