Answer:

Planters owned the Indigo factories and the indigo villages were established near this only. Usually, women bought the Indigo plants after its cultivation. It was taken to the Vats in the Indigo factory. Vat is a storage vessel or a fermenting vessel which is used for various purposes. To manufacture indigo dye, 3 to 4 vats were required. Each of these vats had a separate function. In the first vat, Indigo plants after removing the leaves were soaked in the warm water. The liquid boil and produce bubble when the plants fermented. These rotten leaves were removed from the warm water and the water was drained out in the second vat which was placed below the first vat.

After this, the water in the second vat was continuously stirred and beaten. The liquid gradually turns green and then blue after this lime water was added to the water. At the bottom of the second vat, was muddy sediment which will be removed in flakes and the clear water comes above. The water drained out and the indigo pulp which was the sediment shifted into another vat which was also called settling vat. This sediment is then pressed and dried to sell.
