coastal plains are regional features of low relief bounded seaward by the shore and landward by highlands (Freeman and Morris, 1958). Between the sea and the highlands they rise gently, frequently in a series of terraces or flats separated by scarps or hills to altitudes as high as 100–300 meters.

These are narrow coastal strips, running along the Arabian Sea on the west and Bay of Bengal on the east.

These are known as western coast and eastern coast of the coastal plains.

The western coast is sandwiched between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea.

It is a narrow plain and consists of three sections.

The eastern coastal plains are wider and drier resulting in shifting sand dunes on its plains. There are well-developed deltas here, formed by the rivers flowing eastward in to the Bay of Bengal. These include the deltas of the Mahanadi, the Godavari, the Krishna and the Kaveri
