Akbar was the third Mughal emperor and his reign lasted from 1556 to 1605. He was the successor to Humayun and was enthroned at an early age. He ruled initially with the help of his regent Bairam Khan.

His kingdom covered the whole of northern India and extended up to the Godavari river.

A slew of invasions helped him to expand the empire. Akbar's forces defeated King Hemu in 1556 and occupied Delhi and Agra. Later, he defeated King Sikander Shah Suri and captured Lahore and Multan. In 1558, he captured Ajmer. Malwa was invaded and annexed in 1560. This was followed by the capture of Gondwana in 1564, and later the Rajputana kingdom. He then moved on to annexe Ahmedabad and Surat. In 1574, the Mughal forces took over Patna.

Akbar's army then marched to Kabul, Baluchistan and Kandahar and took over these kingdoms.

By this time, it was one of the largest empires in the world.
