Reactivity of an element is usually dependent on how that element reacts with oxygen and hydrogen. If the reaction is vigorous then the element is very reactive, and vice versa. Now there arises a problem in defining reactivity of elements who react with neither of the two. So displacement reactions in which a higher reactive element displaces a low reactive element from the low reactive element's salt solution is used to determine reactivity.
E.g. Ag can displace Au from salt of Au in aqueous medium so Ag is more reactive than Au
