You can produce both longitudinal and transverse wave pulses on aslinky spring, to contrast and compare them. In transverse waves the particles oscillate at right angles to the direction of travel of the wave. In longitudinal waves the particles oscillate along the direction of travel of the wave.
A Slinky can easily demonstrate some basic types of waves, longitudinal, transverse, and standing, as well as several others. A longitudinal wave vibrates parallel to (moves in the same direction of) wave travel (this is a good example of sound waves).
