In this classification, all living mammals are divided into two subclasses: Prototheria, which includes monotremes, and Theria, which includes the infraclasses of metatherian (marsupials) and eutherian (placentals) mammals. Simpson grouped placental mammals into about 30 orders, of which 17 were still living.
