Formation of Indian States:
After the Indian Independence, there were 550 princely states in India. It was a huge task to merge them in the Indian Union. It was the man, Sardar Vallabhai Patel who merged all the princely states by 1950 into the Indian Union.
The first problem faced by the Indian union after the Indian Independence was the demand of States reorganization. Almost every presidency demanded to divide them on the basis of language. People speaking Kannada as Karnataka, Tamil speaking as Tamil Nadu etc. However, at that time some States were created like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka.
But in 1952, Potti Sriramulu demanded a separate state for Telugu speaking people. He began a hunger strike and died after long fasting. This was the turning point in States reorganisation.
So in 1953, a commission was appointed called as State Reorganization commission and the act was passed. This commission comprised of three members who should form states on the basis of languages.
In 1956, on the basis of this report 14 states and 6 union territories were created.
