The constitution of India identifies OBCs as socially and educationally backward classes.

For their upliftment, the Govt is empowered to take steps and ensure their development.

Some of these steps are 27% reservation in Govt jobs and educational institutions.

OBC is a term used by the Govt to classify castes which are socially or educationally or economically disadvantaged.
