On what ground can you say that scandium (Z = 21) is a transition element but zinc (Z = 30) is not? [NCERT Example]

While considering incompletely filled d-orbitals as a criteria for transition elements Scandium atom in its ground state has 3d1 d orbital configuration.

Zinc has completely filled 3d10 electronic configuration in both ground state and in its oxidised states. Hence it’s not regarded as a Transition Element.

On the other hand, zinc atom has completely filled d-orbitals (3d10) in its ground sate as well as in its oxidised state, hence it is not regarded as a transition element
