Now we must evaluate what important role Mother Earth plays in the character of Sita. There must be an important reason why Sita was born and died directly through the earth. In Indian mythology the earth is the most powerful element and considered most stable. These two attributes could definitely play a part in how Sita became such an important character in the Ramayana. The power she derived from being born from the earth could be manifested in her ability to stand up to Ravana day in and day out. She was the first challenge that he could not overcome. It took a lot of power for her to stay in his palace and not be swayed by him. Secondly, Rama relied on Sita to help keep him stable in his life. Through the whole story of the Ramayana, Rama starts every day thinking of her and ends the day thinking of her as well. This stability keeps him in positive spirits and able to take on any challenge that comes before him. The earth is stable and strong, which defines Sita's character. Now we will explore a few other characters of the Ramayana to see what their births tell about their life stories.
