There isn't anything mentioned about Marquess and Montferrat but in the play it is said that, Portia first encounters Bassanio when he met her with Marquess and Montferrat.

On that moment only she liked Bassanio and wishes him to be her husband.

She believed that Bassanio was a Venitian scholar and a soldier.

But later on in the story of caskets, Bassanio comes and marries Portia.
