The real, in-depth answer to that is, at once, fundamentally simple — YES, the material realm does require consciousness to exist — and remarkably elusive to grasp.

First, to address the latter part of my comment, grasping the interactive nature of Consciousness/Reality: you, as a conscious entity, perceive a physical realm about you, a reality that consists of matter, objects, other people, etc. All readers of these words are just that, conscious entities able to observe, reason and grasp complex ideas, making sense of it all by comparison, quickly and subtly, to held beliefs and definitions.

That is, you, the reader, to make sense of what I’m writing here, compare my descriptions and statements to a wide range of definitions and conceptualizations you hold in your subconscious. For the most part, things I say that fit into your accepted understanding, you will agree with and think to be correct. If I say things that don’t jibe with your current belief structure, you will mentally argue or simply dismiss my illustration as faulty or deluded…

To fully recognize the nature of one’s own Consciousness, it requires an open mind — one must be ready to question his/her own held beliefs. There is more going on in life than is obvious, primarily because perception is distorted by current beliefs.

Many people hold notions of a creator god, existing somehow external to reality, swooshing it into existence. Such beliefs distort perception — no such entity exists, but will appear to if believed in.

Many others hold the scientific paradigm as key interpretive tool to understanding reality. That, too, distorts perception: trying to understand a fundamentally subjective experience by using an objective paradigm is doomed to fail. Science is a useful tool for many things, but it distorts perception of the interactive nature of things — the Oneness of Consciousness with Reality.
