Let's remove the complicated physics of mass, and the speed of light and instead talk about how time travel would conceptually work.

Let's start with travelling into the future.

Your starting point is whatever time the present was when you made the leap forward. Your arrival point (say 10 years into the future) will also be the present as that will be the time you continue to exist in. Is this YOUR future? No. This is the future as it would have been had you ceased to exist/gone missing on the date you left at the starting point.

You can never see your exact future. But you can come close. I'll explain soon.

Travelling to the past ALSO brings you to the present as this too is where you exist in time upon arrival. Because you cannot help but alter future events (your starting point) simply by existing in that past point in time, your timeline can no longer occur and you will create a new timeline where you now forever reside. You see, all events that transpired to create your present came to be because of ALL past events. Even wind patterns. Winds carry all sorts of microscopic bacteria, viruses, and spores. They also carry seeds and dust and insects. Your very presence could alter the route of a seed that becomes a tree that provides shade or shelter to 2 people that meet this way and develop a relationship that progresses into having children. This is the nature of what is called 'the Butterfly Effect.’ Your presence alters time, thus alters reality going forward. You become a stowaway in another timeline.
