Telangana Praja Samiti was established in 1969. The establishing president of the party was Ananthula Madan Mohan. Later the charge of the party took over by Marri Chenna Reddy who initiated the Telangana agitation and finally acquiring over 10 Lok Sabha seats in the 1971 elections. However,  the members merged into the Congress party.

The party was reactivated again in 1983 with Vande Mataram Ramchander Rao, as the President, Pratap Kishore was the General Secretary for planning a series of strikes and protests throughout the Telangana area to push their demand for a separate state.

In June 1969 widespread strikes were organized by the TPS in Hyderabad led to popular violence as TPS followers opposed with advocates of a united Andhra state and with police. In September 1971 TPS joined with Congress, and the Telangana agitations disappeared.

There was no exact date when Telangana Praja Samithi decided to change the scope of its organisation from non political to political body but it was in year around 1970-1971 when party decided to fight general election in 1971.
