hi mate

Once an egg is released, it has a very limited lifespan during which fertilization is possible, before it dissolves. This is why the day of ovulation *is* the day of fertilization.

Estimates of egg viability usually range between 6-12 hours, although if you are using a fertility awareness method or natural family planning method of teaching your cycles, egg viability is given 24 hours (and the window of possible ovulation in these methods is typically 3 days and sometimes 5 days) because they approximate ovulation, they do not pinpoint it to an exact day.

So while sperm can survive 3-5 days according to clinical observations of sperm life in a hospitable environment, (with some case studies and bio statistical approaches indicating sperm survival can rarely be up to 7 days), egg life is much shorter. Once an egg is released, sperm have possibly up to 12 hours to join with it. Therefore ovulation day = fertilization day. Some women may release a second egg from the other ovary (the cause of fraternal twins); this happens within 24 hours of the first egg release.

Once fertilized the egg is no more, having been fundamentally changed. In zygote form and then blastocyst form it typically takes between 6-12 days to implant, where it is then referred to as an embryo. (Some sources allow 5-14 days.)
