Separation of mixture basically depends on the Physical and Chemical properties of the components.

These factors are, state, melting and boiling point, solubility, magnetic nature etc.

For different shapes and state of matters like solid, liquid or gas, we use different filteration processes.
For different boiling points of components of mixture, we use distillation, fractional distillation etc.
For different solubilty behaviour, we use sedimentation and filteration etc.
similarly we can use chromatography techniques for different proportion and distribution of the components.
If components have magnetic nature, we can separate them by using magnetic seperation technique.
In overall, the separation of mixtures, wheather homogneous or heterogeneous depends on the pjysical and chemical nature of the constituent substances.
