On which Hindi tithi does the high tide occur?
Answers
Answer:
previous answerers pointed out, there is no shortage of online (and non-online) tide table almanacs. However, if all you want is a simple rule of thumb, then this is all you need to remember is this:
The tide is at maximum when the Moon is roughly overhead, or on the far the of Earth. And to a lesser extent when the Sun is overhead (noon), or on the far side of Earth (midnight). When both these effects occur at the same time, then you will get the highest tides.
Conversely, when the Moon and Sun are both near the horizon, you will get the lowest tides.
As a consequence of the Sun-Moon orientations described above, both the highest tides and lowest tides will occur during times of New moon and Full moon.
Bonus: If you happen to have access to a Hebrew calendar, which is lunar-based, you can use it to know the phases of the Moon. Specifically, the
High tide occurs on Purnima.
- The Hindi tithi 'Purnima' is the day on which the full moon occurs.
- It is a Sanskrit term and marks the day on which Moon is aligned on a straight line with the Earth and the Sun.
- Since on purnima there is a cent percent illumination, it causes high tides.
