Jallianwala Baagh Massacre was the incident where Mahatma Gandhi returned Kaisar-i-Hind medal to the British
EXPLANATION:
- Also known as the Amritsar Massacre, the Jallianwala Baagh Massacre took place on '13 April 2019' at Jallianwala Baagh, a public garden, in Amritsar, Punjab. It was one of the most heinous political crimes committed by the British in the 20th century.
- On that day General Reginal Dyer (an Indian-born officer of the Bengal Army) was convinced a major rebellion may take place and had banned all public meetings. However, this notice was not extensively circulated, and several villagers met in the Jallianwala Baagh to celebrate Baisakhi, an important Sikh festival, and also peacefully protested the 'detention and deportation of 2 national leaders'.
- It was then that General Dyer had ordered his men to fire into the crowd of unarmed civilians that killed nearly 400 people. After this incident, several Indian political leaders expressed their anguish and protested in different ways. On 30 May 1919 Gandhiji returned the 'Kaiser-i-Hind Gold medal' which was given to him for his work during the Boer war.
