The unknown mass is placed in the right pan and the standard pans are placed in the left pan, generally. We want to balance the beam so that the beam is completely horizontal.
There are two types of beam that are present on the beam balance. On one of the beam we present the object which is placed and on the other Beam we place the weight them there is a comparison of the mass that is done between the two object. This helps in determination of the weight of an object. This is not an absolute method of determination of mass but a relative method.
