The electric motor works on the principle of magnetic effect of electric current.

When current is passed through a coil of many circular loops, armature coil; then, due to the magnetic effect of electruc currrent, magnetic field around it is induced.

This results in the coil to experience a couple of equal and opposite forces, constituing a torque and thus rotating the coil along it axis.

This is based on Fleming's Left hand rule
