Onam is festival celebrated by malayalees all over the world. It is celebrated to honour King Mahabali. The story behind Onam lies behind this king. When King Mahabali ruled kerala, everyone was always happy. They used to wear new clothes each day and used to eat a very fulfilling meal called sadya consisting of curries, rice, papad, payasam and other things according to traditions. It used to be like heaven. The Gods in heaven looked down and thought that no one will want to come to heaven because of this and they came down. They then put King Mahabali under the ground but before that they had asked for his last wish. King Mahabali had asked that every year, one this day, Onam should be celebrated. And so it was done. Some people celebrate Onam for 36 days, 10 days etc. On Onam, we also make patterns using many colours of flowers called athapookalam. My Onam experience was amazing! I spent it with my family and friends and enjoyed it thoroughly! I celebrated it with my parents, brothers, aunt, uncle and a few family friends. We made an athapookalam using many colours of flowers. We had a very fulfilling sadya and payasam.
